Ana’s History

Ana started to paint at the age of 8 as a way of occupying her free time after school. Plastic/Visual arts have quickly developed into a huge passion and become a significant part of her life ever since. Combining studio artwork with academic training, sports, family, and work, it has been through painting, the use of color and drawing, that she has found her very own way of conveying a message to those who (view and) observe her works. That is how Ana likes to express her experiences and moments to the world around her: she invites us to follow her on a unique journey, where each one of us can walk along the same tracks and yet create our own story. The techniques she uses most are oil on canvas as well as drawing with Chinese ink on paper. Yet, other media, such as pastel, acrylic and spray are also part of her portfolio. Her participation in individual and collective exhibitions, be it in Portugal or abroad, has allowed her work to become more widely spread and recognized. Her artwork has been displayed in several collections inside and outside the country. Ana has a degree in Conservation and Restoration from the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, with most of her time being dedicated to conservation and restoration of Mural Paintings. Further on, she holds a Master’s degree in Museography and Museology from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon. It has been a journey of more than 20 years filled with love for drawing and for painting.

Artwork

Over time Ana has discovered many techniques that unveil her wish for evasion, or her desire for inventing or revealing a universe of her own, if you will- where birds live and where trees bloom to show us other worlds. Such could be the painting of an imaginative flower, for instance.

At other times we encounter objects in suspension which, just as the artist herself or we may find ourselves hanging in there and expecting something to happen. There are moments we so tightly hold on to in the hope of preventing time from taking us with it. Recently, color has become an accessory; one discovers drawings that display fractions of mind wanderings and of forgotten or bygone places which in turn have become the protagonists of mute black and white stories; stories that speak volumes about those places empty of people. “Non-places of non-people” painted with the same candor as all other artworks in the very beginning of Ana’s art career.
